To reflect the new name, Information Technology Services has also changed the email address that students and employees should use when seeking assistance from our Service Desk support staff to ITSHelp@mail.wvu.edu. As always, customers may continue to submit self-service trouble tickets here or call 304-293-4444. ITS provides telephone assistance from 6:30 a.m. to midnight every day. Anyone who maintains a University website that uses the previous email address (oithelp@mail.wvu.edu) should change those references to ITSHelp@mail.wvu.edu. However, emails sent to the old address will automatically reroute to the new address.

Students and faculty will be able to access WVU eCampus on mobile devices starting this fall by downloading the new Blackboard Mobile Learn app.

A mobile application that brings two-way teaching and learning to iOS and Android devices has been the most-requested feature from both students and faculty members. Information Technology Services will provide details about availability and downloading instructions as the launch date approaches, so please watch for updates.

The simple, intuitive app gives students full access to their course information directly from mobile devices. Designed specifically for the iOS and Android platforms, the app lets students check grades and assignments, view documents, create discussion and blog posts, and much more. Instructors can post announcements, view class rosters and perform other tasks.

Wireless Internet service will be available free of charge to visitors on the Morgantown campus and the Potomac State College campus in Keyser by Aug.1, eliminating both cost and the need to seek specific passwords from a sponsor.

Information Technology Services is currently rolling out this change to all academic and office buildings, and to the lobbies of residence halls. Steve Belcher, assistant director of networking, said the work should be completed by the end of July.

“WVU.Guest” will automatically appear when users refresh their list of available network, and users will be prompted to complete a brief registration form.

The Office of Student Accounts reminds students of several critical dates related to the tuition billing and payment process. Students who miss these dates are at risk of being removed from their scheduled classes. All students are required to pay at least 60 percent of their Fall 2014 bill by Wednesday, Aug. 13, which is earlier than in past years. Financial aid such as loans and scholarships, in addition to tuition waivers, personal payments, or pending third party contracts will all count toward the total calculation. The critical dates include:

1. Monday, July 14, 2014: Students will receive their first billing notification for fall 2014 via MIX
2. Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2014: Students must have paid at least 60 percent of their tuition and other assessed charges
3. Thursday, Aug. 14, 2014: Students who do not satisfy the 60 percent minimum payment requirement will be removed from all registered classes.

Students are encouraged to look at their accounts online (through MIX) to determine their account status. Students will also receive direct communications from the University leading up to the Aug. 13 deadline via email, postcards, etc. For more information, contact Student Accounts at 304-293-4006 or OSA@mail.wvu.edu.

30 May

On Saturday, May 10, more than 200 master’s and bachelor’s degree candidates “looking for a new adventure” crossed the stage at the WVU Creative Arts to Center during the WVU P.I. Reed School of Journalism’s 2014 Commencement ceremony. Keynote speaker Amy Webb, founder and CEO of Webbmedia Group, began “in the great tradition of President Gee” by taking an epic selfie with the grads. She then followed it with a tweet to the Ellen DeGeneres Show asking them to hire our graduates. Webb’s entire speech, Today I’m Going to Predict Your Future: Five important things that will happen before your 20-year college reunion, is available on Medium.com.

Following Webb’s speech and the conferral of degrees, Associate Dean Dr. Diana Martinelli recognized top scholars in the undergraduate program. Lindsey Beall received the Top Overall Scholar award and the Top Scholar in Public Relations award; Alexis Cunningham received the Top Scholar in Advertising award; and Ian Moore was named Top Scholar in Journalism. The awards were determined based on overall GPA.

WVU celebrated its 145th year of Commencement ceremonies this year. If you would like to watch a video of the SOJ’s graduation, visit http://journalism.wvu.edu/about/featured-events/may-commencement-2014
